The African Big 5

The Big 5 consists of the lion, the African elephant, the Cape Buffalo, the leopard and the rhinoceros.

Lions are large carnivorous felines of Africa and northwest India, having a short tawny coat, a tufted tail, and the male has a heavy mane around the neck and shoulders. Most lions now live in eastern and southern Africa, and their numbers there are rapidly decreasing. Lions can reach an age of over 20 years in captivity. cape town safari game drive lion big 5 south africa

The White Rhinoceros is one of the five species of rhinoceros that still exist, and is the most common of all rhinos. It has a wide mouth used for grazing and is the most social of all rhino species. The White Rhinoceros is the world's largest land mammal after the elephants.
African buffalo have few predators and are capable of defending themselves against (and sometimes killing) lions. Known as "Black Death", the African Buffalo is widely regarded as a very dangerous animal, as it gores and kills over 200 people every year. Buffalo are notorious among big game hunters, with wounded animals reported to ambush and attack pursuers.

African elephant males stand 3.6 meters tall at the shoulder and weigh 5.5 tonnes, while females stand 3 meters tall and weigh between 3.5 and 4.5 tonnes. Their tusks are used for digging for roots and stripping the bark off trees for food, for fighting each other during mating season, and for defending themselves against predators. The tusks weigh from 22-44kg and can be up to 2.5m long.
The leopard is mostly a nocturnal creature; but there have been recorded instances of leopards hunting during the daytime, especially when the sky is overcast. They spend much of their days resting and sleeping, up in the branches of trees, or in the grass. This is why leopards are difficult to see in the wild, and it's quite unlikely that you may encounter one on a game drive... but you never know.
